Preface

Somewhere in-between

the maze of concrete rivers,

and towering grey canopies,

where the city's hunger did not bite,

there is green.

Somewhere in-between

where the network of winding canals,

mighty green treetops

and the mass of life does not venture,

there is stillness.

Somewhere in-between

where the mind of pulsing pressures,

outstanding red priorities

and the stresses of day are left behind,

there is revival.

Programme Note

Somewhere In-Between describes the precious green spaces that can be found across London, where you can escape into the stillness of nature, and return to the busyness of life revived. In particular, I was inspired by the Walthamstow Wetlands and Lea Valley, which despite being in Zone 3, feel very much like the countryside with a paddock, highland cattle, canals and untouched marshland. The style of the music sits "somewhere in-between" contemporary classical music and Latin Jazz, specifically Bossa Nova, a genre famous for its relaxed and laid-back feeling. To reflect the journey of rejuvenation through the piece, the soloist begins on the mellow and somewhat melancholic-sounding flugelhorn and as the music becomes more lively and animated, the soloist switches to the brighter sounding trumpet in Bb.
