Claudia Scheier
Orchestras of Auschwitz Choreographer
Claudia Schreier has choreographed, directed, and produced for dance, opera, and film across the U.S. and internationally. Born in New York, Ms. Schreier trained at the Ballet School of Stamford under the direction of Stephanie Marini and received a B.A. in Sociology and Secondary Degree in Dramatic Arts from Harvard University.
She is the recipient of the Princess Grace Award for Choreography, NEFA National Dance Project Award, Dance/NYC Dance Advancement Fund grant supported by the Ford Foundation, Lotos Foundation Prize for Dance, and Suzanne Farrell Dance Prize in recognition for Outstanding Artistry in the Field of Dance, and winner of the Breaking Glass Project choreographic competition.
She was a 2017 Virginia B. Toulmin Fellow at the Center for Ballet and the Arts at NYU. Ms. Schreier was named Choreographer in Residence at Atlanta Ballet in 2020. She has choreographed over 50 works and has been commissioned by companies and organizations including San Francisco Ballet, Boston Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Vail Dance Festival, Guggenheim Works & Process, Richmond Ballet, American Ballet Theatre Studio Company, Juilliard Opera, New York Choreographic Institute, Cathedral Choir Society, New York Choral Society, and Joffrey Winning Works. Her first work for Atlanta Ballet, First Impulse, was named a Standout Performance of 2019 by Pointe Magazine.
In October 2022, Ms. Schreier and Atlanta Ballet partnered with the Cathedral Choir Society to present Berlioz's Roméo et Juliette at the Washington National Cathedral. Her ballet for Dance Theatre of Harlem, Passage, is the subject of the 2019 Emmy Award-winning (Capital Region) PBS documentary "Dancing On the Shoulders of Giants." Her live performance and film collaboration with visual artist Rashid Johnson, The Hikers, has been presented at museums including the Aspen Art Museum, Museo Tamayo, Hauser & Wirth NY, Storm King Art Center, the High Museum of Art, and The Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Her film Places, commissioned by Miami City Ballet, was named a standout performance by The New York Times.
She has presented several full-evening performances of her choreography with Claudia Schreier & Company since 2015, featuring dancers from leading companies and collaborations with composers and musicians. In 2017, Claudia Schreier & Company made its debut at The Joyce Theater for the 2017 Ballet Festival, chronicled in the documentary short film, Sixth Position.Ms. Schreier served as Artistic Co-Director for Juilliard Opera's International Tour of Dido and Aeneas ​to Opera Holland Park in London and Opéra Royal de Versailles. She has served as Associate Choreographer/Producer and Ballet Master to Damian Woetzel and has contributed to programs including the Jazz at Lincoln Center premiere and U.S. Tour of SPACES by Wynton Marsalis featuring Lil Buck and Jared Grimes, Vail Dance Festival: Remix NYC at New York City Center, DEMO at the Kennedy Center, and the 2016 White House Turnaround Arts Program Talent Show, hosted by Michelle Obama.
Ms. Schreier served as Ballet Master and Production Assistant for the 2017 Kennedy Center Honors tribute to Carmen de Lavallade. Her TEDx talk "Thinking On Your Feet," presented at Columbia University and featuring Sarabande, a ballet on film featuring ABT dancers Stephanie Williams and Calvin Royal III, was named one of Pointe Magazine's 8 Favorite Ballet TED Talks. She has been featured by The New York Times, The Washington Post, NPR, BBC News, ABC News, NBC News, The Forward, The Atlanta-Journal Constitution, SF Chronicle, The Miami Herald, Marie Claire, Dance Magazine, Pointe, and ELLE and was a featured guest on the television program Black America. Her published writings include “Body Language in Kongo Art: A Choreographer’s Perspective” for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and articles for Vail Dance Festival Magazine and the Juilliard Journal.
